Four Ways to Make Your Rental Feel More Like Home

Short-term rentals often feel more comfortable than the standard hotel room. But are there ways to make it feel a little more like home as well?

When you stay in temporary housing for a long time, you can easily feel homesick. However, if you bring some small comforts with you, things can immediately feel better. While most rentals through Travelers Haven don’t allow you to do major redecorations, such as putting holes in the wall or making any material changes to the property, there are ways around these stipulations if you’re creative enough.

Here are four simple yet effective ways to uplift a living space away from home.

Wall hangings

A visual from home will immediately bring a feeling of comfort. Look for existing wall nails or holes in the rental, or pick up picture-hanging strips, hooks, or sticky tack to avoid damaging the walls.

These can be as small as the typical 5×7 frame size or as large as a dominant centerpiece for your living space. You could also hang up tapestries or other printed fabrics for design and color. Images of nature, cityscapes, your favorite band, or another interest can help you feel more at ease.

Throws

Throws work in much the same way. A simple blanket you would usually leave on your bed or sofa can be made into a soothing reminder of home while on the road. Whether you focus on color, texture, or weight, it can be another source of comfort, making the place you stay more comfortable, too.

Cushions & pillows

I always take my own pillow with me when I travel, but that is more for reliability than for anything else. However, I do appreciate that adding extra cushions to a bed or sofa can make it feel more welcoming. A few colorful prints or familiar patterns quickly uplifts your space and works well in temporary housing.

If you don’t want to bring the entire pillow or cushion, just bring the slipcovers.

Photos

Bringing a couple of photos from home is a quick and easy way to brighten up your space. A free-standing photo can add an element of familiarity to shelves, a nightstand, or desk space. If you want to add a little more character, bringing an easel and stand your pictures up on it in a corner of your room.
