The Loop Neighborhood
The Loop is the heart of Chicago and is undeniably the most iconic part of the city. It’s the perfect place to start exploring if you’ve never been to Chicago before. You can take an official architecture tour along the Chicago River or an unofficial one along the elevated train tracks, and it’s hard not to feel awestruck by the towering buildings on LaSalle and Michigan Avenue. The Loop is also home to a world-class collection of public art, including large statues by some of the 20th century’s most famous sculptors.
The Loop got its name from the looping route of streetcars that used to be the transit hub of downtown Chicago. Nowadays, the name refers to the looping route of elevated train tracks that serve seven CTA lines and keep the Loop at the center of Chicago’s working world. Despite the city’s center of gravity gradually shifting north and the pull of suburbanization, the Loop remains the most attractive location in the city for major businesses and most visitors.
During a workday, it’s easy to see that you’re at the center of everything. People in suits rush in and out of tall buildings, theaters advertise their big productions on neon marquees, and almost every block has a connection to a Chicago movie like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or The Dark Knight. The Loop is the second largest central business district in North America, largely due to its historical role as the financial hub of the Midwest and home to the world’s largest futures market. Many of those people in suits walking by (as you stand and stare) work for one of the four major financial exchanges in the Loop, the largest of which is the merger between the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade. The CBoT was the world’s first modern futures exchange and, along with the other major exchanges in Chicago, played a key role in the development of the modern derivatives industry. Not too long ago, the streets were bustling with people working at the Merc and CBoT, which traded over nine million contracts daily worth over $4.2 trillion. However, the current economic climate has led to layoffs and other downsizing at these exchanges.
But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of fun to be had in the Loop, with Millennium Park and the festivals in Grant Park, as well as the Art Institute. A walk by the Sears Tower and the Chicago Board of Trade is a must for any Chicago visitor, but the Loop is not as well known for its nightlife, shopping, and dining as other parts of the city. Keep in mind that the Loop is primarily a business district, so many things shut down when the commuters go home, so even if you’re staying at one of the classic old hotels in the Loop, don’t plan to spend all your time here – although your camera will probably get a lot of use.
