The Loop Neiborhood
The Loop is a 35-block area in downtown Chicago, Illinois, United States, known for its central business district and iconic elevated train line. The term “Loop” likely originated from a cable-car line that circled the downtown area in the 1880s, but it became more commonly used after the completion of the Chicago Union Elevated Railway (the “El”) in 1897, which forms a loop around the neighborhood. The Loop is bound by Lake Street to the north, Wabash Avenue to the east, Van Buren Street to the south, and Wells Street to the west. The term is now sometimes used to refer to downtown Chicago as a whole, particularly the area enclosed by the Chicago River, Michigan Avenue, and Congress Parkway.
The Loop is a bustling area of downtown Chicago known for its shopping and financial districts. State Street is home to several large department stores, and LaSalle Street, often considered Chicago’s “Wall Street,” is the location of major financial institutions such as the Chicago Stock Exchange, the Chicago Board of Trade, and the Chicago Board Options Exchange. The Loop was also the site of the world’s first skyscraper, the Home Insurance Company Building, which was completed in 1885 and demolished in 1931. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Loop saw the construction of several innovative buildings by architects such as Daniel Burnham, William Holabird, William Le Baron Jenney, and John Wellborn Root. In the second half of the 20th century, the Loop’s architecture became more diverse, with the addition of International style, Modernist, and postmodern structures, as well as several steel high-rise buildings. The Willis Tower, just west of the Loop, is one of the world’s tallest buildings at 1,450 feet. The Loop also boasts outdoor works of art by notable artists such as Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso. Several colleges and universities have campuses in and around the Loop.
